  • 1/2 cup Japanese rice
  • Salt
  • Fillings of your choice (e.g., seasoned seaweed, cooked salmon, pickled plum)
  • Soy sauce or dipping sauce for serving
Instructions
  1. Cook 1/2 cup of Japanese rice according to package instructions and let it cool slightly.
  2. While the rice is still warm, wet your hands and sprinkle a pinch of salt onto your palms.
  3. Take a small handful of cooked rice and flatten it in the palm of your hand.
  4. Place your desired filling, such as a piece of seasoned seaweed or a spoonful of cooked salmon, in the center of the rice.
  5. Fold the rice over the filling to encase it completely, shaping it into a triangle or ball.
  6. Repeat the process to make additional onigiri with different fillings if desired.
  7. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and lightly oil the surface.
  8. Place the onigiri in the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Serve the onigiri warm or at room temperature with a side of soy sauce or your favorite dipping sauce.
Note
  • Use short-grain Japanese rice for the best texture and stickiness.
  • Wet your hands before shaping the rice balls to prevent sticking.
  • Experiment with different fillings such as salmon, tuna, pickled plum, or seasoned seaweed.
