  • 1/4 cup each of five different lentils (moong dal, masoor dal, toor dal, chana dal, and urad dal)
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped fresh coriander leaves for garnishin
Instructions
  1. Wash and soak the lentils for about 30 minutes. Then, cook them in a pressure cooker with enough water until soft and mushy.
  2. In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and green chilies. Sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.
  6. Add asafoetida, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Pour in the cooked lentils and mix thoroughly. Add water if needed to achieve the desired consistency.
  8. Let the dal simmer for a few minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.
  9. Sprinkle garam masala over the dal and give it a final stir.
